Gene Sheldon performs his classic act on a classic banjo, the Bacon and Day tenor Silver Bell. Check out his effective use of the knee mute, a special feature of the Bacon and Day. I think this was on the Jackie Gleason Show in the 1950's. For more info on tenor and plectrum banjo please visit http://www.banjojazz.com/ or join our group here on YouTube called BANJO JAZZ.

for unimaginative people [most people in heavy industrial times, like this time] this is funny. even today to that same type of person. but today, most people wouldn't find this funny who are imaginative. For example, show this to a 30 years old or a 20 years old person and they wouldn't laugh.

This was Gene's appearance on "JACKIE GLEASON'S AMERICAN SCENE MAGAZINE", during the 1962-'63 season.

He's playing a "Bacon and Day Silver Bell". It's got a "Spoon" mute which desribes the shape of the lever underneath, worked by the leg. It pushes a damper against the head directly beneathe the bridge

You don't need much volume control with a thin flatpick...
